ARTIST STATEMENT

INTERACTION  (10 x 24 feet, Polymer on Canvas, 2017) is based on two main principles; my continued practice of using elements of rhythm and pattern combined with elements of color practices to activate the picture plane.  The elements of rhythm and repetition can also be associated with the construction of music with pattern, shape, counter point and improvisation. Rhythm, repetition and chaos also describes the nature of education and the nursing profession, INTERACTION  will be both connective and nurturing to the viewer.  The visual construction of INTERACTION  is a rectangle that is divided equally into 24" x 24” squares which produce a repeating grid of 60. Each square is divided into 4 irregular shapes which create additional pattern and motion; which can also be seen as musical tempo.  INTERACTION  also addresses specific elements of color practice i.e. contrast, color schemes, value, intensity and hue.    The color scheme of INTERACTION  is composed of various color families which will harmonize, contrast, create discordance and indicate surface activity and direction.

The placement of INTERACTION  is unique in that it is not only seen at eye level and witnessed frontally, it will be viewed from below, from the adjacent stairs and from the second level.  INTERACTION  will become an important entity in the lobby of the BETTY IRENE MOORE SCHOOL OF NURSING and will become a visual icon of the campus.
